A brief history of

Risen Savior Lutheran Church

In the fall of 1997, Pastor Steven Blumer was called by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) to serve as a home missionary to the East Orlando area.  Following his arrival, some 3000 visits to households were made in the first seven months of 1998.  Neighboring WELS congregations also assisted greatly in helping start the mission church and in making phone calls to residents in the area.

Risen Savior began its public journey of preaching the Gospel message by renting the gymnasium at Orlando Lutheran Academy, a high school on Econlockhatchee Trail.  Sixty people attended the first service on September 13th, 1998.  A month later, Risen Savior held its "Grand Opening Service."

One year after public services began, Risen Savior adopted a charter, the first offical step in becoming a congregation with members!  At the same time, the WELS Mission Board gave early approval for finding land.  Thanks to the Church Extension Fund (CEF), Risen Savior quickly took hold of a priceless piece of real estate along Alafaya Trail in 2000.  At the time, Alafaya Trail was rather bare south of the East-West Expressway.  In a few years, however, Alafaya Trail would be bursting at the seams with no end in sight.

Over the next couple of years, Risen Savior began to grow in membership.  Occasionally, the congregation sought outside help from Martin Luther College Students to canvass the area with door-to-door visits.  Efforts were not in vain as the Holy Spirit worked in the hearts of some one-hundred-and-one confirmed members by the end of 2002.

Meanwhile, the members of Risen Savior worked diligently to establish a constitution and bylaws.  In 2001, the congregation was incorporated in the state of Florida and became an offically organized congregation of the WELS.  They also met with various contractors about the vision of a future home for worship.  After numerous delays and careful planning, Risen Savior eagerly broke ground on October 27th, 2002 on a $1.05 million building project.

The home for Risen Savior opened its doors at 1331 S. Alafaya Trail on June 1st, 2003.  The next years would be prosperous years for the Lord’s work at Risen Savior.  In less than four years, the congregation’s membership roles have more than doubled.  The congregation began a Spanish outreach ministry in 2005.

May the Lord continue to bless Risen Savior in the future as He has so graciously showered His blessings upon us in the past.
